Dead Hands
A shot in which the hands remain relatively passive in the hitting area, resulting in a shot that flies a shorter distance than it normally would.
Decelerate
A decreasing of the clubhead speed in the hitting area.
Deep Face
A club head that is greater than 1-5/8” from the sole of the club to the top line of the insert is said to have a deep face.
Deep-Faced Driver
A driver with greater-than-standard height on its face.
Delayed Hit
A golf term used to describe the Conservation of Angular Momentum.
Dimple
The indentations on a golf ball.
Divot
A scar or tear, created by a golf club, in the turf on any part of the course.
The turf displaced when the club strikes the ball on a descending path. It also refers to the hole left after play.
Dogleg
A golf hole that bends or changes direction midway through. It can bend to the right or the left or both.
Dormie
The point in match play when a player is up in a match by the same number of holes that remain.
In Match Play, a side or player is said to be dormie when it is “up in holes” in as many as there are holes to be played. Example: 3 up with 3 holes to be played.
USGA: The side or player that is down must win the next hole to continue the competition. If the side that is down wins the last three holes the Match would end in a tie.
Double Bogey
A score of two strokes over par for any single hole
Double Eagle
A score of three strokes under par for any single hole. Same as an "albatross"
Doubles
When a caddie carries two sets of clubs
Downhill Lie
Where the ball lies on a downhill slope in the direction of your intended play
Downswing
See "Forward Swing" . The stage in the golf swing that the club begins to travel back towards striking the ball. Starting at the top of the swing and ending at ball contact.
Draw
A shot that flies slightly from right to left for right-handed players.
Drive
The first shot from the tee box. A player can use any club.
Drive-and-Pitch
The type of hole on which the green can be reached with a drive and a pitch. Could also refer to a course where all holes are of this type.
Driver
The club that used to hit the ball the furthest. Also called the No 1 wood.
Driving Iron
An iron with low loft and a muscle or hollow body similar to a wood.
Driving Range
Another term for a practice area. Also known as a golf range, practice range or learning center. An area used for the purpose of practicing full shots.
Drop
The method of returning a ball to play.
Duck Hook
A shot that flies sharply from right to left for right-handed players. It is usually hit unintentionally, since it is difficult to control.
Dynamic Balance
Transferring the focus of weight appropriately during the golf swing while maintaining body control.
