Half ShotA shot played with an abbreviated swing and reduced swing speed.

HalvedWhen a match is played without a decision. A hole is "halved" when both sides play it in the same number of strokes

HandicapThe number of strokes a player may deduct from his actual score to adjust his scoring ability to the level of a scratch golfer. It is designed to allow golfers of different abilities to basically compete on the same level.

HazardA hazard is any bunker or water on the course that may cause difficulty.

HeadThe part of the club that makes contact with the ball. Usually made of wood, iron or some substitute material.

HeelThe part of the club head nearest the shaft.   A shot hit off the heel is said to be "heeled."

Heel and Toe WeightedA club design where weight is distributed towards the heel and toe of a club, usually an iron, to reduce the effect of mis-hits.

Hickory WoodHickory Wood from a native North American tree used at the beginning of the 19th century to make club shafts. Use continued until the 1920's.

High Polish Finish Shiny (mirror) finish applied to stainless steel iron heads through a series of polishing operations.

High Side The side of the hole that a putt breaks from.

High-Modulus Graphite A shaft material stiffer than standard graphite. The higher the modulus of graphite, the lower its compression strength.

HitTo play a shot or stroke.

HitterA player who favors a forceful, aggressive style of swing.

Hole A 4 1/2" round cup/hole in the green - at least 4" deep. Also refers to one of the nine or eighteen areas between the tee and the green.

Hole in OneTo hole out with one stroke. Same as "ace"

Hole OutTo complete the play for one hole by hitting the ball into the cup.

HonorThe privilege of hitting first from the tee. Usually assigned at the first tee. After the first tee, the privilege goes to the winner of the previous hole.

HoodingThe act of placing the hands ahead of the ball, both at address and impact, which tends to reduce the effective loft of the club.

HookTo hit the ball in a manner that causes it to curve sharply from right to left in the case of a right-handed player or left to right for a left hander.

Hook Face A wood with a closed face angle. Hook face woods may help players who slice to hit the ball straight.

Horizontal Flow Weighting Distributing weight from club to club in a set of irons, with the highest concentration of weight moving from the toe of the longer irons to the heel of the shorter irons.

HoselThe hollow part of a club head into which the shaft is fitted.
