R & A
Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
Radius
The distance between the center of the swing arc and the hands on the grip.
Rails
Raised areas on the soles of metal woods, lowering the center of gravity of the club and providing less resistance as the club travels through the turf.
Rap
To hit a putt with a short, firm stroke.
Reading the Green (or Putt)
The entire process involved in judging the break and path of a putt.
Determining the path which the ball will take on its way to the hole by analyzing the contour and texture of the green.
Recover
To successfully hit a shot from a poor location.
Regular Shaft
A shaft with normal flex.
Release
The act of allowing the hands to turn over at impact and returning the clubhead squarely to the ball at impact, producing a powerful shot.
Rescue Club
A name given to any number of clubs that combine features of a wood and an iron. "Rescue" is also the trademarked name of this type of club from TaylorMade that began the trend. See also "Hybrid."
Reverse Overlap
For a right-handed player, a putting grip in which the index finger of the right hand overlaps the little finger of the left and the converse for a left-handed player.
Reverse Pivot
A swing in which the players weight shifts forward on the backswing and backwards on the forward swing. The results are loss of power and slices.
Reverse Weight Shift
A swing flaw in which the weight moves forward on the backswing instead of to the back leg.
Road Hole
The par-4 17th hole at the Old Course at St. Andrews, one of the most famous and difficult holes in the world.
Roll
The measure of face curvature from crown to sole on woods.
Rough
Long grass areas adjacent to fairway, greens, tee off areas or hazards.
Round
A complete game of golf - 18 holes is one round
Round Robin
A tournament format in which players or team play a variety of other teams, the winner being the player or team that accumulates the highest number of points.
Rub of the Green
Any accident, not caused by a player or caddie, that moves or stops a ball in play and for which no relief is given under the rules. This is when your ball is deflected by agencies beyond your control that are not part of the match or the competitor's side in stroke play. A bit of bad luck.
Run
The distance the ball rolls on the ground or when it lands on the ground.
Run-Up
An approach shot that is close to the ground or on the ground.
Rhythm
The fluid motion during the golf swing or putting stroke.
